52%Syrah (Clifton Vineyard, Wahluke Slope, WA)

47% Syrah(Sawtooth block 46)

1% Petit Sirah (Obsidian Vnyd, Healdsburg,CA)

 

The 2017 Sidewinder is more of a composite of vineyards than ever before.  This is the result of a harsh Idaho winter in 2017, which did tremendous damage to one of the Syrah blocks where I normally source fruit.  As a result, this Syrah is more fruit forward and luscious than my typical Sidewinder.  It still possesses the earthiness and roasted meat characteristic of Sawtooth block 46, but the Washington fruit brings gushing red personality and eucalyptus herbaceousness.  The Washington fruit also brings a higher acidity, making this Syrah racier than in years past.  This is a full-bodied, full-throttle wine, but the velvet finish and high acidity make it a nice partner to a variety of dishes.

 

This wine was fermented in a similar way to the Mamba, but with different yeast and with a cold soak period of four days prior to fermentation.  It was also pressed before being completely dry because the tannins where so bold.
